Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design offers Bachelor’s degrees in a variety of creative subjects. The focus is on hand-on, active learning, so a majority of classroom time is spent in studios. The average class size is 12, and the overall school population is around 500 students. This allows for a lot of individual attention from faculty, who are professionals in their fields.
Students need an average of 2.0 or better in high school to be considered to admittance to RMCAD. A portfolio is required, but for students with little art experience, substitutions can be made.
Graphic Design and digital Media Program
Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design offers a 120 credit Bachelor’s of Arts degree in graphic design and digital media. Students are given real, practical work situations – for projects, they are given deadlines and budgets – to see how projects are managed throughout the whole process.
While technical skills play a major role, RMCAD also emphasizes artistic aspects of design. Courses in typography, problem solving, communication strategy, and behavioral science introduce students to how good design fits into people’s lives. Students are given design problems to evaluate, research, and understand. The goal is to create design solutions and gain experience that they can use throughout their careers.
Design concepts, basic photography, typography, 3D packaging, and more prepare a core foundation. Students add to that with knowledge in digital media, history of art and design, communication and critical thought, math, physical science, behavioral and social science, and humanities and contemporary thought. Studio classes in electronic prepress, motion design, interaction design, and media design.
Students put these skills to use with internships, working with design professionals and international design organizations. Since faculty members are experts in the field, they not only bring their knowledge but also their connections. From working with area non-profits to local businesses to national organizations, students have abundant opportunities to work with professionals in authentic environments.
A myriad of career choices await students upon graduation: advertising designer or director, creative director, graphic designer, marketing consultant, layout designer, website designer, packaging designer, or graphics designer for tv/film. Students will also be prepared for work in the competitive field of graphic design with a professional portfolio and help from faculty and RMCAD career services. RMCAD also offers continuing education opportunities for designers, teachers, or anyone interested in updating their design skills.
Licensing and Accreditation
Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design is accredited regionally by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and nationally by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
Faculty and Facilities
The campus of RMCAD started its life as a sanatorium for people suffering from tuberculosis in the early twentieth century. Next, it became a cancer research center and home to the American Medical Center. In fact, the cancer research center of AMC still operates in a corner of the campus. RMCAD took ownership in 2003, preserving the beauty and historical integrity of the buildings while modernizing them to meet the needs of today’s design students.
RMCAD has theaters, galleries, classroom space, and conference rooms. There are no on-campus dorms for students, but RMCAD recommends that students live at the Regency, where they are housed on the third floor. Remaining floors house students from Metropolitan State College of Denver, University of Colorado at Denver, and the Community College of Denver.
Financial Aid
Students complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid in order to determine eligibility for federal and state aid. RMCAD offers new students a Merit Scholarship and/or a Talent Scholarship, which are based on academic and artistic achievement.
