In 1997, engineers in the Silicon Valley and Bay Area forsaw the demand for computer and business professionals in the information field. They knew that people would need educational programs to prepare them for the 21st Century. What emerged was the Summit Educational Group, LLC located in Redondo Beach, three miles away from the beautiful coast of the Pacific Ocean.
In 1999, Gates College was approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. The Bureau determined and certified that the college met the standards of instructional and educational quality and institutional stability. The college offered its first class in 1999 in Computer Networking (MCSE), A+ and CISCO certification training.

The field of Graphic Design is a constantly-growing field that is utilized by companies who market and promote their products and services. The Graphic Design program teaches the applications used in the Industry. In addition, students receive training in typography, color in design and learn additional skills that are required in the industry. This program introduces students to web design and other applications where Graphic Designers would work. Students also learn interpersonal skills that are crucial to extablishing working relationships and study the theory and practice of organizations. This practical, broad-based education assures the graduates' success in the Graphic Design field.
Placement services are available for graduates of the program to assist them in securing a position in the Graphic Design field.

The city of Redondo Beach has its own police, fire and public works departments. It also has two public libraries, 15 parks, a performing arts center, 13 "parkettes", a large commercial and recreational harbor that includes King Harbor which is a 1,500-slip private craft port.
The city is located in the coastal edge of Los Angeles County; it is just twenty miles from downtown Los Angeles and only seven miles south of Los Angeles International Airport. Redondo Beach has been a resort destination for more than a century and is one of the most popular areas in the country to live.
Many large employers have a presence in the area including the northern industrial complex anchored by the TRW campus. Also in this area are the the Harbor/Pier area and the Galleria at South Bay–-a regional mall at the east end of the City. At the sound of the city there is ample shopping with an interesting mix of specialty shops, restaurants and services in the Riviera Village area.
